Welcome to the James Dempsey Grand Suite

Here the Lumber-Baron and Master of the House, the Hon. James Dempsey, sought peace and privacy from the demands of the Industrial Age. History comes alive in the Grand Suite -- as you, too, enjoy the peace, privacy, and privilege he enjoyed. After scrolling through the photographs, read more about this, the Inn's Premier Suite, below.

This opulent Lumber-Baron hideaway-Suite can’t be topped. Exclusive. Aristocratic. Romantic. The James Dempsey Grand Suite occupies approximately one-third of the Mansion’s second floor. It has two private entrances: one from the West wing into the Bedroom, and one from the East wing under the North Tower into the Sitting/Living Room.

Its large walnut-trimmed Bedroom has a walk-in closet with its original oak chest of drawers, an original tile and handcarved-wood fireplace, a bay window (with window bench), and lovely antique appointments: oriental carpets,  an armoire, upholstered armchairs, and a most elegant massive 19th century four-poster canopy bed purchased from the sale of furnishings from a Victorian Seattle Washington mansion. It has a larger-than-queen medium-firm custom mattress handmade in Holland by Buis Mattress Company.

The Suite has a voluminous Sitting Room, directly under the North Tower, which exceeds the size of the Bedroom. It is also furnished in period antiques which include a velvet sofa and matching armchair, a game table and chairs, a vitrine parlor table, a Gentleman's Cabinet, an 18th century style drop-down desk with chest of drawers, an English tall-case clock, an English corner cabinet, an iron-frame French daybed with custom upholstery, a period chandelier original to the mansion, and an original tiled and handcarved-wood fireplace.

Among the art in the Grand Suite Bedroom is a large antique Orientalist original canvas by Phillip Miller, antique porcelains, an outstanding Period reverse-glass painting of Martha Washington by William Matthew Prior, and a rich Still Life on canvas by Lester Schultz. The art in the Sitting/Living Room includes several large Oriental handpainted-on-silk naturalistic ornithological studies, large period Chinese blue-and-white urns, and a large finely executed 18th century English portrait of an aristocratic gentleman contemporary with the Martha Washington portrait.

Ensuite to the sitting room is an ample original bath, a clawfoot tub with shower enclosure, a porcelain pedestal sink, and a bank of stunning original built-in oak cabinets finely detailed in classical motifs. The bathroom has a marvelous recently-restored original parquet floor.

If you never make it to the boutique French Chateaux Hotels of the Loire Valley, or spend a weekend at one of the great Manors of the English countryside, or stay in one of the lovely restored Castles in Scotland...a stay in the James Dempsey Mansion's Grand Suite will more than suffice.
